With millions of Mahjong players around the world, Australia is upholding its reputation as a significant competitor via a partnership between Mahjong Australia and The Star, Sydney.

For the first time in Australia, Mahjong players will have the opportunity to play in a major tournament, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, at the internationally renowned entertainment destination, The Star, Sydney. The Star will welcome 300 players from across Australia and internationally, with key players coming from China and Hong Kong, plus numerous other countries including Malaysia, Singapore and the USA.

Steve Pesce, CEO of Mahjong Australia commented on the opportunity that the partnership with The Star has provided for the game, the players and the community. “Partnering with The Star to host this inaugural tournament is critical for the recognition and profile of Mahjong in Australia and it allows us to showcase Australian players to the world. Without The Star’s support, the event would not have been possible. We look forward to continuing this partnership as we build the profile of the much-loved game in Australia,” said Mr Pesce.

Hugh Fraser, General Manager of Gaming Operations at The Star is proud to partner with Mahjong Australia and is excited to host this inaugural major tournament. “The Star has seen a tremendous rise in the popularity of Mahjong, and as such we recently increased the number of game sessions from two to five days a week, with over 350 participants at each daily event. Mahjong’s popularity in Australia is on the rise and as it’s such an exciting game to watch, we expect many people to join us in celebrating the traditions of the game on June 1 and 2.”

“It’s a stimulating game that requires great skill and a little luck and is renowned for being a very social game. We look forward to welcoming competitors and the wider community at the hub of Mahjong in Australia – The Star Event Centre,” concluded Mr Fraser.

Both competitors, and those interested in watching and learning to play are encouraged to attend, with player registrations closing 31 May 2015. Onsite at The Star Event Centre from 31 May – 2 June there will be mini competitions and other activations, encouraging everyone to have a go.

The Star will also host additional games in preparation for the major tournament with two special sessions on Sunday 31 May at 2pm and 7:30pm. Two days of competition will conclude with the grand finale, crowning the 2015 Grand Master at 9pm on Tuesday 2 June.
