Species: Male, Threat: ZERO. Captain Marvel hits the Cinemas!

Rating: 5/5

!!SPOILER ALERT!!

When you are truly yourself, when you find yourself, that’s when you’ll shine the brightest.

The long-anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, Captain Marvel (2019), has hit the cinemas! Being one of the few female-led superhero movies in Hollywood, Captain Marvel is surely a palate cleanser.

Vers who eventually is known as Captain Marvel or Carol Danvers and is portrayed by Brie Larson. The actress brought the character to life by adding her own flair. Larson is one of Captain Marvel biggest fan and it is only apt that she plays the superhero.

All heroes have an origin story and Danvers’s started here on Earth. Unable to remember her past, she is forced to believe that she was a member of the Kree, a group of noble warrior heroes, but with the help of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Danvers soon discovers that this is not the case at all.

For pioneer MCU fans, Fury’s appearance in this movie is highly anticipated. Firstly, because Fury still has both of his eyes. Secondly, how Fury lost an eye will be revealed. Jackson and Fury might as well be synonymous. Jackson carries the character so well one might have a hard time figuring out if the one on the big screen is Jackson or Fury.

From beginning to end, Danvers only had one aim; end all wars. However, she was led to believe that she was not good enough, that she always let her emotions get the best of her and her Kree ‘mentor’, Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) constantly reminded her that that was her weakness. Emotions.

Landing on a planet you are unfamiliar with, finding out you had a whole different life on that planet and realizing you were not who you thought you were can be a lot to take in emotionally.

Danvers crash landed on c-35 (Earth) and was in pursuit of Skrulls who were looking for Doctor Walter Lawson (Annette Bening) when she met Fury. Initially, Fury was skeptical of Danvers and at one point implied that she was crazy. However, when he realized that a Skrull took the form of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), Fury led Danvers to a classified United State Air Force location to find out more about Doctor Lawson who happens to be an Air Force pilot. There Danvers discovered that she had a life on earth. Whoever Danvers thought and believed she was were all lies fed by the, SPOILER ALERT, Kree! How the tables have turned. Krees are the ones who removed her past memories and implanted false memories into her mind. Danvers had to found out more about her past and who exactly Doctor Lawson was. She, Fury and Goose, an adorable ginger cat, made their way to find Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) who was Danvers’s best friend. They worked together with the Skrulls to end the war that was going on between Kree and Skrulls.

Throughout the movie, the clear stand out would definitely be Goose. Skrulls were appalled by the cat and Kree found it threatening. Turns out Goose is actually more than just a cat, Goose is a Flerken, an alien creature that resembles a cat. From purring to suddenly showcasing its strong yet frightful superpowers, Goose is definitely one of the audience favorites.

Audience these days are hard to please, but Captain Marvel did it right every way it possibly could. Danvers, despite being a superhero is relatable to many, if not most girls. A big muscular man (Yon-Rogg) telling what you can and cannot do, telling you your emotions are restricting you from your potential, telling you your worth. HE’S WRONG. The the only thing holding her back was him. When Danvers let go and trusted herself, that was when she became the strongest. that was when she skyrocketed (literally and figuratively).

Inspiring little girls, teenage girls, young women and women, these are the reasons why movies like Captain Marvel is made. These are the reasons why there is a need for such movies. Being true to yourself is one thing, but when you believe in yourself, you become limitless and you can and will always go higher, further and faster.
